Chococat (チョコキャット, chokokyatto), real name Choco (チョコ, choko)[1], is a character created by Sanrio and is the main protagonist of the Chococat universe. He is a relatively small black cat with large eyes, a long tail, four whiskers, and a chocolate-colored nose, which his name is based on. His birthday is May 10th. Usually, we see him wearing a blue collar, but occasionally, he also dons other colored collars. Like Hello Kitty and a few others such as Pochacco, Chococat does not have a visible mouth. He lives in the Choco-choco House, where he often plays with his friends, Cookie-Bau the dog, Nutz the hamster, Jellybean the bunny, and the Duckies.[2] He made his first appearance in 1996, the same year as Pompompurin.
In the United States, like Badtz-Maru, Chococat is critically acclaimed by both children and adults and had high sales, which explains his prominent role in Hello Kitty and Friends Supercute Adventures (as this animated show is based on American culture). Despite this, in Japan, his popularity is low, and as such, his merchandise there is extremely rare. In addition, his official character rankings are far lower than those of others such as Hello Kitty, My Melody, Cinnamoroll, Keroppi, Kuromi, and other popular characters. Therefore, Chococat himself is not technically considered a flagship character for Sanrio outside of North America.
Personality
Chococat is always full of energy and loves to find out new things. He is logical, intuitive, and thoughtful,[3] although he can be absentminded at times. His hobbies include exploring and stargazing. His favorite foods are sweets, especially Chocoball, a Japanese chocolate candy. [4]
His special skill is using his whiskers as antennas to catch all kinds of information,[4] so he is often the first to know about things.[2]
In some media, specifically Hello Kitty and Friends Supercute Adventures, Chococat also appears to love reading and science due to his intelligence and is known for comically saying catchphrases such as "illogical!" or "quivering quotation marks!"
History and Merchandising
Chococat was first introduced in 1996.
Like many other Sanrio characters, Chococat appears on a variety of merchandise, including stationery, coffee mugs, plush toys, bath towels, hats, purses, notebooks, etc. When Sanrio releases new Chococat lines, the background colors and designs, Chococat's collar and fur color, and his accessories and friends are often altered. Originally pictured with a blue collar, Sanrio has since depicted Chococat wearing various colored collars, scarves, and even a lei. Sanrio has also produced new Chococat products that portray him in a greyish-brown color. In the Momoberry version, Chococat is pink with a top hat, bow tie, and cane. Line names are often heavily relied upon in internet sales descriptions.
