The Food Character Election (食べキャラ総選挙, tabe kyara sō senkyo) was an official user-participatory Sanrio contest held on the Sanrio Character Ranking website from September 3rd through December 1st, 2013 where fans could vote for their favorite out of 20 original food-themed characters, with the top 3 characters with the most votes making their debut as official Sanrio characters on December 12th, 2013. The winners of the contest were KIRIMIchan (1st place), Gudetama (2nd place), and Kashiwankomochi (3rd place). The campaign had the slogan "Eat or be eaten, shinken shōbu!" (食うか食われるか真剣勝負!)
The Food Character Election would be succeeded by the Next Kawaii Project, 9 years later.
Voting
Fans could vote for characters either by voting once a day online at sanriocharacterranking.com or by making purchases of either clear files for 168 yen or stickers for 210 of their favorite character from in-person Sanrio stores. Each purchase would gain the character 5 votes and, unlike with online voting, there was no limit as to how many times you could vote.
